Treatment of Malignant Neoplasms of the Nasal and Paranasal Sinuses by Photodynamic Laser Therapy (PDT) With Temoporfin

Introduction: The treatment of recurring carcinomas of the paranasal sinuses proves difficult in most cases. Due to the anatomical proximity of the sinuses to the orbits and the cranial base, it has a high risk of complications with regard to both surgical and radiation therapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a relatively new therapy option for various cancer entities, including head and neck tumours. The advantage of secondgeneration photosensitizing agents such as Foscan is their comparatively high effectiveness and low phototoxicity.

Patients and methods: We report on our experience with photodynamic therapy (PDT) used to treat four patients with recurring carcinomas in the area of the nasal and paranasal sinuses. One patient suffered from a recurring squamous cell carcinoma in the sphenoid sinus. Prior to our study, she received surgery and radiotherapy several times. The second patient suffered from a recurring adenoid cystic carcinoma in the maxillary sinus.
