Training and Development Trends in the Hospitality Industry- Evidence from Hospitality Management Journals

Training is considered important by different stakeholders in the hospitality industry. Factors such as technology advancements, terrorism, and the Generation Y workforce have significantly shifted the training needs. The aim of this study is to identify the trends and research areas of hospitality training and development. A systematic review of the literatures was used to review the research articles about training and development in eleven hospitality management journals. The keywords, i.e. “training” and “training and development”, were adopted to identify relevant articles. Twohundred and thirteen articles, which were published from 2005 to 2014, were selected by a review panel. Seventy-five articles were screened and then analyzed with the reference of nine categories recommended by the Association of Talent Development. Trends are established by reviewing the training and development research using an ontological approach. Training needs analysis is still being ignored in hospitality training. Besides, there is lacking of research on e-learning and career management. Training needs analysis, return on investment, career management and e-learning are recommended for further exploration in future research.
